Leadership perspectives: 1Password’s chief people officer on navigating a startup environment

Katya Laviolette, the chief people officer of 1Password, discusses taking large-company HR expertise into the startup environment.

In this next installment of our Leadership Perspectives video series, Heidrick & Struggles’ Nancie Lataille speaks to Katya Laviolette, the chief people officer at 1Password, a password manager, digital vault, form filler, and secure digital wallet company. Before joining 1Password, Laviolette held executive and senior level positions at SSENSE, TC Transcontinental, CBC|Radio-Canada, Rio Tinto, Bombardier and CN. She is also a board director with Sanimax and Laps (CDPQ).

Laviolette, who spent many years at large, established organizations and then made the switch to the tech and high-growth environment, shares the skills and experiences she currently leverages as well as what skills and experiences she feels she would not have acquired or used had she not joined a scale-up company. She also discusses how she is thinking about and continuing to develop company culture in the remote-first environment, how the workplace will continue to evolve, and why HR expertise is so important on boards.
